Summary:
In this part, Dana tells a little bit more about her relationship with Kevin. Dana stuck with her job after Kevin offered to give her financial support to quit it. He even offered her a job typing his stories, which she hated doing, so she said no. They fought over the issue. They got over it and married. The two faced considerable objections from both of their families. Kevin's sister said that she would bar Kevin and Dana from her house if they married and Dana's uncle, who had been like a father to her, was hurt by her decision. Dana and Kevin decided to marry in Las Vegas.
In the next, it has been eight days since she has returned to the present while Kevin is still stuck in the past. Dana packs everything that she will need like a map, knife and books. This is when she feels Rufus' call.
Rufus is in a fight with a young black man while a young black woman is watching. Rufus falls unconscious to the ground when Dana stops the fight. She learns that the young black woman is Alice and the young man is Isaac, her husband. Isaac is fighting Rufus because Rufus raped Alice.Dana is upset but saves him again and gives the two a running head start. She then convinces Rufus not to tell who beat him up and instead say a group of white people did it. Rufus does not seem to care that he does not have to tell because Alice will get what she deserves. Rufus says that he loved Alice and wanted her to himself, but she would not have him. Dana takes him back to the plantation where she learns it has been five years since she has been gone, and also a year since Kevin left.
Reaction:
It is sad that there is no shame in raping a black woman, but in loving one there is. It is too bad that Rufus loves Alice, but society does not accept his love. It is upsetting that Rufus would take out his anger this way and only contributes more to his ultimate downfall.
