Kindred: The Fall (5-8)

Summary:
Dana does all of the household chores as Kevin tries to get Dana to leave the Weylin's house but Dana refuses. She worries that Rufus will turn into his father so she wants him to have as many fond memories of her so he will not turn. Also she wants to wait until Rufus's leg heals. Rufus, who has a broken leg, then calls her to side saying he does feel bad about Sarah's sons and daughters being sold. This gives Dana some relief. On her way downstairs, Mr. Weylin tells Dana he wants to buy her. When she refuses, telling him that she belongs to Kevin, He tells her that she will regret it. The next day, Mr. Weylin forces Dana to watch him whip a man who talked back to him.
One day, Margaret Weylin, Tom Weylin's wife and Rufus' mother, asks where Dana has been sleeping. Dana admits that she has been sleeping with Kevin. Margaret slaps Dana but she does not fight back because she knows she will be whipped. Dana finds out later that Margaret fancies Kevin and is upset that Kevin likes Dana more than her. Dana is advised by Sarah not to sleep with Kevin anymore or else she would do something terrible. Mrs. Weylin was the one who insisted on selling the babies.
Dana continues to sleep with Kevin, but feels guilty like she is Kevin's whore. Mr. Weylin catches Dana in the library one day, reading and tells her not to read anymore on her own time. In defiance, she starts to teach Nigel how to read which is against the rules of the household. If they got caught, the punishment would be severe. A few days later, Kevin and Dana witness children playing a slave auction. Dana is horrified while Kevin thinks she is overreacting. She is disturbed at how easily Kevin has become accustomed to slave life.
One time, when Dana was reading to Rufus, Margaret started to fuss over him and see if he was hungry or hot. Eventually, Rufus loses his temper. Dana starts to see how much he looks like his father. After the reading, Dana sits down to teach Nigel to read, only to find Carrie with him. Weylin finds them, takes Dana by the collar and starts to whip her. She feels the same dizzy and nauseous feeling and starts to go back.

Reaction:
There is a sense of foreboding when Mr. Weylin tells Dana that she will regret what she has done. He means to punish her because she would not sell herself to him. He shows her his power by whipping the man who talked back to him and eventually whipping her for teaching his slaves how to read.
Also in this section, Rufus is described, for the first time, as sounding and looking like his father when he goes off on his mother. This signifies a great change happening in Rufus, one that will continue to grow over the sections. As he grows older, he acquires more power over the estate and at this age, he is starting to gain control over his mother.
It should be noted that Kevin did not go along with Dana when she traveled back to the present. There makes a good plot line for the next chapter.
